Ka Pōʻai Ānuenue Piha
(The Full Circle Rainbow)

ʻAʻohe kekahi wehewehe ʻana kikoʻī a nā puku wehewehe no kēia ʻano ānuenue, akā, naʻe, He pōʻai kēlā me kēia piʻo ānuenue.  Pono ka mea nānā e piʻi aʻe i kekahi waai kiʻekiʻe loa i mea e ʻike iho ai i ka pōʻai ānuenue piha.  Wahi a nā puke wehewehe Hawaiʻi-Pelekane, ʻo kēia ka wehewehe ʻana o ka piʻo ānuenue:

 

There is no specific definition in the dictionaries for this type of rainbow, however, each and every arching rainbow is a circle.  The observer needs to climb to a very high location as a way to see the circular rainbow.  According to the Hawaiian-English dictionaries, this is the definition o the arching rainbow:

Kekahi kiʻi i hōʻoia ʻole ʻia:   Kuhikuhi kēia mau kiʻi i kēia ʻano ānuenue ma muli o ko ka mea kākau maopopo ʻana i nā wehewehe ʻana o nā puke wehewehe, ka pōʻaiapili ma loko o kekahi mau kaʻao, kekahi ʻatikala nūpepa, a me kekahi hoʻopaʻa leo Hawaiʻi.  ʻAʻole panina lākou.

Unverified Photos:  These photos demonstrate this type of rainbow based on the authorʻs understanding of the dictionary definitions, context within some Hawaiian legends, newspaper articles, and Hawaiian language recordings.  They are not definitive.

Nā hōʻailona a me nā ʻōuli:
(Signs and omens):

ʻAʻole ʻike pinepine ʻia kēia ʻano ānuenue nani ma Hawaiʻi.  He hōʻailona a i ʻole he ʻōuli no kekahi mea like ʻole a hōʻike ʻano ʻia i lalo iho:

This type of beautiful rainbow is not often seen in Hawaiʻi.  It can be a sign or omen for a variety of things as described below:

I ka wā hea ʻo ia e ʻōʻili ai?:
(When does it appear):

Aia kekahi moʻolelo kaʻao ma loko o nā nūpepa ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi nona ka pōʻai ānuenue piha.  Ma loko o ia moʻoleo kaʻao i ʻōʻili ai ka pōʻai ānuenue piha ma ka manawa o ka lele ʻana a kekahi lio kupaianaha.  Wahi a kēia moʻolelo/kaʻao:

"Lele ae la ka lio o ianei, a he elua kapuai ke kiekie maluna ae o ke kaupoku o nā hale, lele kikaha ae la oia a puni ke kulanakauhale, me ka auna manu e pohai ana maluna o ia nei, maloko o ka lina poai anuenue.  Uwa ka pihe a haalele wale i keia kamahao, a ua nui loa hoi ka hoopaapaa ana iwaena o kekahi poe, a na oleloia e lakou o Debolo, a i ka kekahi poe hoi, he anela mai ka lani mai...."

There is one story/legend in the Hawaiian language newspapers that contains the full circular rainbow.  In this story/legend the circular rainbow appears at the time a magical horse was flying.  According to this story/legend:

The horse flew here and there, and 2 feet above the roof of the house the height (he flew).  He soared around the town, with the bird flocks that were circling above, inside the circular rainbow racetrack.  There were shouts and cries and this magical thing just departed, and numerous were the debates between some people, and it was said by them of Debolo, and some people said, an angel from heaven...
