Ka Piʻo Ānuenue Pālua
(Double Rainbow)

ʻAʻole hiki loaʻa kekahi wehewehe ʻana kikoʻī no ka ānuenue pālua, no laila, e hoʻohana ʻia ka wehewehe ʻana o ka Piʻo Ānuenue ma aneʻi:  Wahi a nā puke wehewehe Hawaiʻi-Pelekane, ʻo kēia ka wehewehe ʻana o kēia ʻano ānuenue:

There is no specific definition for the double rainbow in the dictionaries.  Therefore the definition of the Piʻo Ānuenue will be used here:  According to the Hawaiian-English dictionaries, this is the definition o this type of rainbow:

Pukui/Elbert:       1. nvs., Arch, arc; bent, arched, curved; to arch, of a rainbow.

Parker:                1. v., To be bent; to be curved; to bend around as the arch of a                                                        rainbow; to curve as an arch; to bend as an elastic substance.

ʻO kēia nō ka ʻāpana, a mau mahele paha o ka pōʻai ānuenue holoʻokoʻa e kau ana, a e kū ana paha ma ke aouli o ka lani.

Ua mau nō ka ʻike pinepine ʻana o nā piʻo ānuenue pālua, i kapa ʻia ka Piʻo Mōʻī, ʻo ia ka piʻo ma loko; a me ka Piʻo Aliʻi, ʻo ia hoʻi ka piʻo ma waho.  Ua ʻoi pākolu ka ikaika a me ka lamalama o ka ʻōwena o ka waihoʻoluʻu o ka Piʻo Mōʻī (Nāwahī, 1893).

This is the portion, a section perhaps of a full circular rainbow. that is suspends and stands perhaps in the blue vault of heaven.

The frequent sightings of the double rainbow endure, named the Piʻo Mōʻī, namely the inner (primary) arc, and the Piʻo Aliʻi, namely the outside arc. The strength of light and the glow of the colors of the Piʻo Mōʻī is 3 times (that of the Piʻo Mōʻī)

Nā hōʻailona a me nā ʻōuli:
(Signs and omens):

ʻIke pinepine ʻia kēia ʻano ānuenue nani ma Hawaiʻi.  He hōʻailona a i ʻole he ʻōuli no kekahi mea like ʻole a hōʻike ʻano ʻia i lalo iho:

This type of beautiful rainbow is often seen in Hawaiʻi.  It can be a sign or omen for a variety of things as described below:

Wahi a nā kaʻao   ʻAʻohe manawa o kēia ʻano ānuenue i ʻōʻili ai ma loko o nā kaʻao i kālailai ʻia.

According to the legends  This type of rainbow did not appear in the legends that were analyzed..

I ka wā hea ʻo ia e ʻōʻili ai?:
(When does it appear):

I ka manawa ua liʻiliʻi kilihune, a ua hiki aʻe ke kiʻekiʻe o ka lā i ka huina he 42, ʻaʻole loa e ʻike ʻia ke ānuenue o ka Piʻo Mōʻī, ʻo ia ka piʻo ānuenue ma loko. A i ka hoʻi e ʻoi aku ai ke kiʻekiʻe o ka lā ma mua o ka huina he 54.5. ʻaʻole loa e ʻike ʻia ke ānuenue o ka Piʻo Aliʻi, ʻo ia hoʻi ka piʻo ma waho.  ʻO kēia kekahi o nā mea pāhaʻohaʻo nui i loko o kā ke akua mau hana (Nāwahī, 1893).

At the time the fine light rain, a when the height of the sun arrives at an angle of 42 degrees, the rainbow of the Piʻo Mōʻī is not seen, namely the inner (primary) rainbow.  And when the height of the sun reaches and exceeds an angle 54.5 degrees, the rainbow of the Piʻo Aliʻi is not seen, namely the outside arch.  This is one of the mysterious things of the work of the gods (Nāwahī, 1893).
