Some Stories/Legends
Perhaps, the majority of information about the rainbow types is found within written sources. Therefore, 10 stories/legends were chosen to read and analyze the rainbow types and associated signs that appear within those stories. These stories are as follows: Lāʻieikawai, Keaomelemele, ʻAukelenuiaikū, Kahalaopuna, Hiʻiakaikapoliopele, Kawelo, ʻUmialīloa, Kekūhaupiʻo, Kamapuaʻa, a me Hainakolo.
The method that was used to collect the sign/omen data was as follows: the context that each and every rainbow appear was analyzed to understand itʻs sign/omen. Then the type of rainbow and itʻs sign/omen was recorded in a spreadsheet. Sometimes, the characters of a story were talking about the same rainbow, in these cases there was only one occurrence of the rainbow recorded in the spreadsheet, not every reference to that rainbow by each character.
As was stated on the English home page, only a portion of the information from the Hawaiian side of this website has been translated into English at this time. As a result, the information for only 4 of the 10 stories below is currently available in English, namely Lāʻieikawai, Kahalaopuna, Keaomelemele, and ʻAukelenuiaikū. The remaining 6 may become available in the future.
